MBW - a dream car - is changing its performance and branding. Reports are that BMW will indeed release a special edition 1 Series towards the end of the model run in mid-2010. Expected to replace the 335i as the link between the M3 and the 135i, and is rumored to come replete with carbon fiber inserts and some sort of BMW Performance Body Kit. Sources conflict as to what sort of engine the M1 will receive, but the options have been whittled down to either a turbocharged 4-cylinder or, in keeping with BMW’s Motorsports Division tradition, a naturally aspirated straight-6. Still other Bimmer fanboys anticipate (albeit slightly unrealistically) a revised version of the twin-turbo I6 currently powering the F01 7 Series to find its way under the 2010 M1’s hood, in which case output would be rated somewhere above 330-hp.Same report says that the look for the 120i to have as much as 240bhp and the 135i to feature the revised twin turbo 3.0L inline six current in the F01 7 Series, potentially producing over 330bhp.

In addition to drive train improvements, the car will make use of such materials as carbon fiber to lighten things up a bit. Specifically they mention carbon roof, boot-lid and a loss of certain cabin comforts. The car could also feature upgraded suspension, brakes and a unique body and it will feature the MotorSport badge. See when they BMW confirm these changes.

Good News For Ford: EPA Rates Hybrid Models At 41 MPG

The Ford Motor Company received some good news lately in the form of the fuel economy ratings from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) for the 2010 Ford Fusion Hybrid and the 2010 Mercury Milan Hybrid. Both cars are projected to return 41 mpg around town and 36 mpg on the highway, numbers that put these cars at the head of the class.Ford had expected that the Fusion/Milan would get 38 perhaps 39 mpg, but when the EPA tests were completed, they were awarded the higher the number. These numbers stand in stark contrast to the Fusion’s nemesis, the Toyota Camry Hybrid, which gets 33 mpg around town and 34 mpg on the highway. Toyota took the hybrid leadership role from Honda a few years back, but now it appears that Ford is making its own case with its two models. 

The 2010 models represent the second generation for the popular mid-sized cars which, along with the Lincoln MKZ, have helped ease Ford’s losses somewhat this year. With the new models expected to hit showrooms in Spring 2009, Ford will have the most fuel efficient mid-sized cars on the market. Indeed, the hybrid models even manage to top the compact Honda Civic Hybrid by one mpg, an amazing feat at that.

Along with the Fusion, Milan and the MKZ, Ford is in the process of releasing a dizzying array of new models.

This past fall, Ford rolled out the next generation is in it highly popular F-Series pickup trucks, delaying their introduction by a few months in hopes that gas prices would stabilize. Better than expected, gas prices have plunged and demand for the pickup truck has surged to the point where the automaker added a second shift to their Kansas City truck assembly plant.

Also coming this Spring is the next generation Mustang, a car that has fallen on hard times lately, but should rebound as buyers seek the latest iteration of the popular pony car. This summer, an all new full sized Ford Taurus and Mercury Montego will debut and those cars will be joined by the Lincoln MKT, a luxury crossover model.

New technologies, including EcoBoost is on its way, an engine configuration that will allow powerplants to put out more power without sacrificing fuel economy. By early 2010, the first of several smaller cars including the all new Fiesta will be on sale, giving Ford more new models in an eighteen month period than any other manufacturer.

Clearly, Ford is on a role. Thanks to the EPA, the Fusion and Milan now have world class fuel numbers to sport too.

The hybrid car, so much has been said about it. Not until now has there been a complete shift and focus on the hybrid’s emergence. With gas prices at an all time high, the economic pressure to save dollars is now forcing Americans to look at alternative money saving measures.

More and more people are opting for carpooling and the use of the public transportation system rather than driving their personal vehicles to and from work. Families are consolidating trips for everyday household errands and are even delaying or canceling family vacations. These changes have come about because of the price of gasoline in America.

Others are even trying alternative methods of fuel combustion, like the Water2Fuel craze. Anything to squeeze a few more miles out of their beloved automobiles in an effort to save money on high fuel costs.

The problem is, Americans do not “like” being forced to change their driving habits. The majority of Americans realize that the reliance on foreign oil is not a good thing and that America needs to find a way to produce its own sustainable fuel source. And there are those that believe the hybrid car is not as effective a technology solution to alternative fuel, such as ethanol, made from corn, switch grass, or even hydrogen and saltwater.

Where will the power that fuels America’s vehicles come from? Nobody seems to know right now. We do know this: Steam power was replaced by electric power, and electric power was replaced by gasoline power. Gasoline power will eventually be replaced with something, hopefully before it’s too late to change its effect on global warming. While hybrid cars represent an “alternative” or a means to find a replacement, they do represent a viable solution.

There is something just so utterly intoxicating about the way Honda’s Super Blackbird blends such enormous raw power with such velvety-smooth refinement.By rights, 152 claimed horses - which still equates with over 130bhp at the rear wheel - should make the 223kg Blackbird a big handful, yet somehow Honda’s wizards have managed to break those horses, and train them to perform a synchronized ballet that would be the envy of Spain’s famed dancing stallions…

Then there’s the fact that some 10 years after its introduction, the Blackbird is still on the pace despite receiving very little in the way of modifications or upgrades.

Released late in 1996, the CBR1100XX went from carburettors to electronic fuel injection in 1999, and then received a catalytic converter and updated headlights, instruments and screen in 2001 - throw in the odd change in colour scheme here and there, and the Blackbird has really undergone very little in the way of tinkering.

And really, why would it? Pointing the bike down Victoria’s Great Ocean Road recently, it showed it can still hold its head high, with a formula that really hasn’t dated since its inception.

The Blackbird’s turbine-like four-cylinder engine develops big torque and big power, with crisp fuel injection that places both at your beck and call. There are no flat spots to speak of, in fact there’s nothing but bulk oomph pretty much throughout its entire rev range, from just off idle to its indicated 10,750rpm redline.

On the road this translates to a pure delight, although it’s perhaps not as involving as other less-powerful machines, as even on a road with quite a variation of turns you can simply pick a gear and stick with it.

The Blackbird was the world’s fastest production bike when it first hit the streets, a mantle it retained for over two years until Suzuki introduced the GSX1300R Hayabusa in May of 1999.

While it’s not quite as strong as the ‘Bus or Kawasaki’s ZX-14 or even ZX-12R, there’s still plenty here to keep you entertained, and you’ll need to watch that right wrist like a hawk if you want any chance of retaining your license…

Stopping is a particularly important issue on a bike like this, and the twin-disc, three-piston Nissins are right on the money. Honda’s Dual Combined Brake System (DCBS) is employed, which won’t please everyone but will be appreciated by others. If you’re not looking to break lap records at Phillip Island, it shouldn’t be an issue - and if you are you should really be looking for something lighter anyway, like a Fireblade.

The suspension, though relatively low-tech, does a beautiful job, but tends towards the plusher end of the spectrum, at least in terms of sportier hardware.

The ‘Bird’s on the money in the comfort stakes too, with a firm but supportive seat, a good screen and slippery bodywork to allow you to scythe through the air. Those on the tall side may find legroom a bit wanting, but there’s still enough there to ensure multi-day tours will still be on the agenda, aided further by the ‘Bird’s optional factory panniers ($1750). So what exactly is the Blackbird’s focus? At 223kg (dry) it’s too heavy to be a pure sportsbike, yet it’s too fast and has too sporty a ride position to be a true tourer.

Really, it’s a power-packed all-rounder and a hyper-tourer on the open road - provided you can find roads on which you can actually explore its potential (try Germany).

But even at legal speeds, that engine will always see you coming back for more. Happy birthday Blackbird - may your reign in the Honda stable continue for many years more.
